This week 7th and 8th grader in Health, Gym, or Explanation had a worker from South Community come and talked to them about signs of suicide.  Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death for ages 11-18 and if it doesn’t go down by 2020 it could be the main cause of death. In the talk, the kids were told about A.C.T. (Acknowledge, Care, Tell a trusting adult). Students were taught what to do and what not to do. If someone ever says they wanna die don’t tell them they have an attitude or they’re being overdramatic. Always tell a trusted adult even if they say not to tell anyone. Every kid got to take a depression screening.  Note these screenings don’t show that you are depressed. Brie Rumore (Prevention Specialist at South Community) “This program gives students the information to know where and how to seek help for themselves or friends if they are feeling depressed or suicidal”. If you or a friend are going through depression or having suicidal thoughts call 1-800-273-8255 or text 741-741 each are open 24/7.
